      Children work well with familiarity. Give them a bath. Brush their teeth. A last drink. The bathroom. Sing them a song or read them a book. This will serve to get your children to wind down and relax and help them to fall asleep faster and easier.

      Remember that your children need to be calming down as they preform their rituals. Horsing around and rough housing will only serve to rile them up and make it harder for them to go to sleep. Also, your own body language will affect them. If you seem impatient for them to fall asleep, they will pick up on that in a negative way.

      Give your children some choices.

      Give them a drawer full of pajamas that they can choose from. Or let them pick the story. They will be much more cooperative as a result because they have some say too.

      Write down the routine from step one. Your children can mark off each step as it is complete and be rewarded with a sticker or a new bedtime story at the end of the week.
