Nursery Rhymes and Dress-Up Ideas
Transform a child into a favorite nursery rhyme character through dress-up. While you can get as lavish as you like when constructing the outfit, nursery rhyme characters are quite simple to create. If you are new to costume making, do not fret; use your imagination to come up with a one-of-a-kind outfit that will put store-bought options to shame.

Three Blind Mice
-
Create a costume for one child to wear, or gather a group of three children to complete the three blind mice ensemble. Purchase a gray sweatsuit and sock hat for the child to wear as the base of the outfit. To construct the body, wrap cotton in felt and sew onto the back of the sweatpants for the tail. Attach a large white piece of felt to the stomach area and place a black felt circle for the belly button. The head will need ears made of gray and pink felt sticking from the top. If the child wants to wear the outfit for Halloween, then you can paint a mouse face onto his face. Complete the look by giving the child a pair of sunglasses to wear and a cane to carry.
Little Bo-Peep
-
Pull a fancy dress from a little girl̵7;s closet and sew a petticoat underneath to create Little Bo-Peep. Any dress, as long as it has cap sleeves and a ribbon sash, will suffice for Little Bo-Peep. She will need black patent leather shoes and white socks for her feet. Add accessories to complete the look with a wide-brim sunhat that has a ribbon for tying underneath the chin, a tall hook cane and a small white or black stuffed sheep. If you plan to use the outfit for Halloween, then consider placing circles of pink on her cheeks to make them appear rosy.
Itsy Bitsy Spider
-
Transform your child into a spider by dressing him in a black sweatsuit and black sock hat. To create the legs of the spider, stuff three pairs of child-size black tights and sew the ends to the back of the sweatshirt; there should be three legs to each side. The child's own two arms complete the spider's eight appendages. Run a heavy black string through the ends of each leg, leaving 4 to 6 inches of space between each leg, and attach the string to the cuff of the sleeve. This will allow the child to move the legs as he moves his arms. Complete the look with four pairs of eyes surrounding the edge of the sock hat. Each eye will consist of layering a small black circle over a large white circle. Arrange the eyes so they are bordering the entire hat, not just the front.
Yankee Doodle Dandy
-
Create a dress-up outfit of Yankee Doodle Dandy by putting your child in royal blue pants and a white shirt. Wrap a vest with red and white stripes around the white shirt. If you do not have a red and white vest then make one yourself by purchasing a white vest and using red fabric paint to create stripes. Place a red, white and blue top hat on his head, black shoes and a small American flag to carry.
