Arts & Crafts With Mango for Little Kids

Mango season begins in May and peaks in August, so it's almost time to start thinking of ways to get your kids to eat them. This is a fruit that is high in fiber, vitamins C, B6 and A. It's full of potassium and helps the digestive system. However, if you tell a child to eat a mango because it's good for him, he may not be interested. But if you create games or think of activities and crafts that your child can make with mangoes then you'll peak his interest, and she may start loving mangoes even more than candy or junk food. Using creativity with fruit is a great way to get kids interested in eating natural, healthy foods.

  1. Mango ice pops

    • Small children love kitchen activities and helping mom make those delicious snacks. One way to get kids to eat that important fruit is to have them help you make mango ice pops. Slice the mango, add about a half cup of water and puree in a blender or food processor. Place the blended mango in a cup or glass that the child can handle. Have the child pour the mango into an ice cube tray and add Popsicle sticks or toothpicks. Place the tray in the freezer and a short while later, children can enjoy great ice pops.

    Grow a mango tree

    • Even if you don't live in an area that is warm and humid, your children can help you grow a mango tree and you can use the tree as a house plant. All you have to do is allow the seed to dry for a few days. Have your children place the seed on a paper towel and place it in an area where it will receive sunlight so it dries quickly. Then extract the seed from the husk with a pair of needle nose pliers---an adult needs to do this. In many cases, the seed will sprout on its own through the husk and you don't actually have to remove the seed. Try it both ways to see which works best for you. Have the child place the seed on a wet paper towel and fold the towel over the seed. Make sure your child keeps the paper towel moist by adding a few drops of water to it every day. When the seed sprouts, you can help your child place it in a pot with potting soil. Keep the plant near a sun-drenched window and you will see it grow by as much as a foot in a few months.

    The mango mash

    • This is a fun rolling and squishing activity you can do with the kids. It's a fun way of eating a mango. Find a ripe mango and start pressing on the fruit skin, but don't break the skin. This will mash the inside fruit. Squeeze and roll it around on the table, until you start to feel that the fruit gets squishy. Cut the tip of the mango skin off for the child. This way he can suck out the pulp and juice and won't get all dirty from eating the mango and he will have fun making his own "in the skin" mango juice.
