Tree Rope Swing Ideas

When making a rope swing, you have many options for how to set it up. The design depends on who will be using it because different swings work better for big or little kids. Inspect the tree you are hanging the swing from to make sure you have chosen the strongest branch and that it is suitable for the design you have chosen.

  1. Tire Swing

    • The tire swing is a classic form of rope swing, but you have different variations to choose from. A simple, small tire hung vertically from a tree provides a size appropriate swing for young children. They can fit their legs through the tire and sit easily. For larger kids or for a bigger swing, use a large tire, like the kind from large SUVs. This is hung vertically as well. The final option is to hang a tire horizontally so it is parallel to the ground. This allows several children to sit on it at once. Having a very strong branch is key to this swing since more children means holding more weight.

    Sitting Swing

    • For a simple sitting rope swing, use a board that people can sit on. Use a wide, smooth board and attach ends of the rope to both sides of the board and the tree. Make the rope long enough so that kids can get onto the swing, but adults' feet don't drag on the ground. This way you create a swing that everyone can use.

    Standing Swing

    • A standing swing provides a small platform people can stand and swing on. Instead of having a board that is tied up on both ends, like the sitting swing, a standing swing is a smaller board. The rope runs through the middle of the board giving the swinger equal sized areas to stand and swing on. The standing swing can be closer to the ground than other swings, since the feet will not drag. However, it does not have to be close to the ground. People can also swing on their knees, instead of their feet, if they aren't as adventurous. Another option is the old fashioned rope swing. This is just a piece of rope hanging from a tree with knots in it. People use the knots as foot and hand holds.
