Classic Short Stories for Children

While each generation of children will find their own favorite tales and short stories, there are some that remain classics for young children throughout time. These short stories tend to have characters that almost all children can relate to, and these stories teach lessons that most children need to learn. They are a helpful way to relate problems and solutions to children in a way they can understand.

  1. Cinderella

    • This is one of the most classic short stories of all time. The University of Pittsburgh has a collection of some of the original versions, including one by Joseph Jacobs called "The Cinder Maid." The story at its core revolves around a young girl who is a lowly maid, but is the perfect match for the prince. It's a coming of age tale that teaches children that being yourself is one of the most important lessons to learn in life.

    Hansel and Gretel

    • This is a classic fable that many children are familiar with, as it has withstood the test of time. This is a tale of a young brother and sister whose father deserts them in the woods, because of pressure put on him by their wicked stepmother. They find a cottage in the woods made of candy and sweets, but unfortunately it is owned by a witch. Through luck and good brains, Hansel and Gretel are able to destroy the witch and return to their father, because coincidentally, their stepmother died as well. The family, as always in fairy tales, lived happily ever after.

    Little Red Riding Hood

    • In another classic children's tale, Little Red Riding Hood is the story of a young girl and a tricky wolf. This evil wolf goes to the girl's grandmother's house, and, after eating her grandmother, pretends to be the grandmother in order to trick the little girl. In the original version written by Charles Perrault, the wolf eats up Little Red Riding Hood. The moral of this story is that children should learn never to talk to strangers.
