Activities & Games for Young Children
When young children get bored, they tend to make a point of telling any adult within earshot about it until they are presented with a game or activity to keep them busy. There are many ways you can keep younger children entertained both indoors and out, and as a group or singly. You can participate in the games and activities with the children to share some quality bonding time together.

Board Games
-
Traditional board games can keep young children occupied for hours. They are a good standby option for rainy days. These games are also recommended to help children unwind and calm down after vigorous physical activities or significant sugar consumption. Checkers or Chinese Checkers are simple games where each player has the objective of getting as many pieces across the board as possible to take over their opponent's side. Other simple racing board games like Candyland require each player draw cards to reach different spots on the board; the objective is to reach the end of the board first.
Arts and Crafts
-
Young children often enjoy creative play. You can either purchase or make Play-Doh, which can be used to mold different shapes and animals. You can also make paper mache molds with shredded newspaper and white glue that has been diluted with warm water. If you have crayons and watercolor or finger paints on hand, consider printing coloring sheets of popular cartoon or fairy tale characters; you can often find free coloring sheets online. Sock puppets are another simple project. Give the children some props and have them use their imaginations to put on a sock puppet show.
Playing with Food
-
Most children enjoy making their own sweets. This practice can be taken a step further however, with decoration. Instead of baking plain cookies, give children cookie cutters, squeeze tube frosting and candy to make dinosaur gingerbread cookies. Caramel apples are a favorite treat in the fall, especially on Halloween. Make them even more festive by creating eyes, ears, noses, hair and mouths out of different candies to transform your apples into tasty monsters. In a similar fashion, you can make butterflies from cupcakes. Cut the tops off of the cupcakes and cut them in half. Frost the cupcake bottoms. Touch the round sides of the cut pieces together on top of the cupcake bottoms to form two wings on each cupcake. Put frosting on the wings and make the butterfly body with gumdrops. Antennae can be fashioned with licorice.
Active Games
-
Tag, along with Hide and Go Seek, are both active games that are suitable for young children. In Tag, one child is selected to chase the other children around until he can touch or "tag" another player. That player then becomes the next child to chase and tag the other players. In Hide and Go Seek, one child counts to an agreed upon number to give the other children enough time to find places to hide. The "seeker" then finds the other players; the child who stays hidden the longest wins.
