Children's Stories With Pussywillows

Telling nature based stories to your kids is a surefire way to get them interested in the environment and more knowledgeable about nature in general. Use stories focused on pussy willows, different plants found in parts of North America, Europe and Asia and so-called for their furry quality. Children's stories with pussy willows include published stories and folklore passed down through the ages.

  1. Pussy Willow

    • "Pussy Willow," by Margaret Wise Brown is a story of a small kitten. Published as part of the Little Golden Book Series, it was re-released in 1996, in a bound, hardback edition. Wise Brown, who also wrote the classic "Goodnight Moon," writes the story from the kitten's perspective. After seeing pussy willows growing in the wild, the kitten decides to give himself the same name because they look alike.

      The book starts in the spring and when spring fades into summer, the pussy willows disappear. The story then focuses on his hunt for the pussy willows and his adventures with other animals and plants. Eventually he finds his way back to the willows, teaching readers a lesson about the journey of finding what they need.

    The Willow Cats

    • Margaret Widdemer is the author of a number of poems, including a short poem, "The Willow Cats." The poem is just 12 lines long and has a simple rhyme, which makes it easy for kids to follow. Supposedly the poem tells one version of how pussy willows came to be, but it's a little dark for smaller kids. It tells the story of grown willow cats that left behind their toes and ran out of town. The toes of the cats or the pussy willows, are the only thing left of them.

    Cats and Kittens

    • The Cats and Kittens story is a piece of folklore for kids that tells a cute origin story of pussy willows. Several versions of the tradtional and anonymous story exist. The story centers on a farm cat that has too many kittens for her master. He tosses the kittens into the river and the mother cat runs to save them. The cat lays down beside the river and cries because she lost her kittens. The willows trees bent over to save the baby cats and rescued every one. The pussy willows growing along the banks are a reminder of that day.
