How to Quickly Babyproof a Hotel Room
You may have spent nine months carefully checking and fixing the various rooms of your home to prepare for your baby's safety, but, when you're traveling, you're going to have a lot less time to ensure your little one doesn't get hurt or into mischief. When you're staying in a hotel room, you'll have just minutes -- if even that -- to get the hotel room ready.
Things You'll Need
- Outlet covers
- Painter's tape
- Corner covers
- Twist ties
Instructions
Call ahead to the hotel to ask for a crib for your baby. If the hotel employees can't have it in the room when you arrive, ask them to roll it in as soon as you check in so you can put your baby in it when you're babyproofing. Just make sure to inspect the crib before you put your child in it to make sure it's in good working order. Also ask whether your hotel has a childproofing kit, recommends Today Travel. Lock the doors, including the security latch near the top of the door, to keep your toddling baby from getting out. Get down on your hands and knees and look around for hazards that are at your child's height. Look under beds and furniture for choking hazards, electrical outlets and sharp corners that might be a problem. Insert plastic plug covers into any open electrical outlets. While you're at it, unplug the hair dryer provided in the room and hide it, if possible. If you don't want to carry around those covers -- and then forget them -- another option is to bring along a roll of blue painter's tape and cover the outlets with them, as well as taping doors and drawers shut. Move chairs and tables away from any windows or sliding glass doors in the room, and check how sturdy the tables and chairs are. If they're wobbly or top-heavy, remove them from the room. Remove any loose materials on the low tables, including the hotel's telephone, notebooks and pens. Put them on higher tables or on top of the TV. Cover any sharp corners with corner covers you brought from home. Tie up the cords on the drapes with your painter's tape, or use twist ties.
