Anger Management Exercises for Teens

Many teenagers are faced with anger management issues at one time or another. Hormone changes, stressful life events and emotional development during the teen years can make it difficult to cope with anger. Some simple anger management techniques can prevent teenager anger issues from developing into lifelong habits.

  1. Writing as a Coping Method

    • Writing is a wonderful way to express anger in a safe and appropriate way. Many teens find journaling helps prevent them from losing their temper and helps them understand the reason they became angry. Journals don't have to be shared with anyone and should not be read by parents without the express permission of the teen. Writing letters to friends can often help teens work through arguments in a way that doesn't encourage further fighting.

    Stepping Back from the Situation

    • Teens should be encouraged to take some time for themselves before reacting when they're faced with a situation that makes it difficult to control anger. Often, a few minutes away from the situation can help a teen clear destructive thoughts and see the situation in a new way. Stepping back can allow a teen to have time to think before reacting in a way that might have long-term consequences.

    Deep Breathing

    • Deep breathing exercises can be very calming and help teens regain control before losing their temper. A parent or adult role model may need to help encourage the teen to try deep breathing the first few times feelings of anger begin to escalate, but in time it will become second nature and help teens develop patience and a greater sense of calm.
