Fetal Development at 27 Weeks

The third trimester of pregnancy has just begun and mom and baby are in the home stretch. The journey so far has been an amazing one. In the weeks ahead, the fetus will gain weight and important lung development will take place. At week 27, the baby will experience periods of waking and sleeping and may even be able to dream. While it is possible at this point to survive outside the womb, the lungs are still not sufficiently developed and the infant would require a great deal of specialized care and medical intervention.

    • By the 27th week of pregnancy the baby will weigh around 2 pounds and be roughly 14 inches long.

    Eyes

    • The baby can now open her eyelids and can recognize dark and light.

    • The baby's brain will be experiencing important development at this time as brain tissue grows.
