Parental Bullying
Even if their intentions are good, some aggressive or intimidating parenting techniques cross the line from strict guidance to bullying. A father might berate his child for not finishing his chores. A mother might pressure a teacher to give her child special treatment. A parent becomes a bully when she uses humiliation, control, manipulation and threats to coerce another person into action, according to Stopbullying.gov.

Parenting Techniques

Some parents push too hard to raise a responsible, accomplished and polite child even if their expectations are unrealistic, according to the website Healthy Children. A dad might put high expectations on his third-grader to make all A̵7;s in hopes that she will be granted a scholarship to a prestigious university. Fear for a child̵7;s safety might cause a parent to scold a child for hours even though a gentle rebuke would have conveyed the message, according to KidsHealth. An overprotective mother might protect her child to such an extent that the child fears making her own decisions. A parent might not even realize she is a bully until her child repeats the behavior, PBS Parents warns.
Parents Bully Teachers
-
A mother might feel her child is lost in the shuffle of an overcrowded classroom. When her initial suggestion that her child receive more one-on-one attention from the teacher is ignored, she might repeatedly ask when her child will get extra help. If her requests are still not met, she might then bully teachers or administrators into listening to her, according to an article in ̶0;Principal Leadership,̶1; published on the National Association of Secondary School Principal̵7;s website.
Effect on Coaches
-
A dad might pay for costumes and props for the school play and then demand that his child gets the lead part. A bullying parent might yell or even threaten the umpires in the baseball game for a perceived bad call. A coach might give the children of more aggressive parents more playing time than kids who have more easy-going parents because he fears the reaction of the more overbearing parents.
Other Parents
-
A parent might spread nasty rumors about another parent̵7;s cheating or shame someone for their decision to put their child in day care instead of staying home. Parents who bully other parents might also take their aggressions out online. Even though teens are most often associated with cyberbullying, some parents post nasty accusations on social networking sites that they would never utter in person, according to the National Science Foundation.
