How to to Keep a Baby From Getting a Flat Head

If you are a parent who is concerned about the shape of your baby's head, there are a few thing you can do to prevent flat head.

      A baby can get a flat head from laying too long in one place without a transition from this position. It is not recommended that a baby should sleep on his back so the back of the head will sometimes take on a flattened appearance, especially when they are very young. Let your baby have tummy time. Always supervise a baby who is on their tummy as some babies are not strong enough to lift their heads if they happen to get stuck face down.

      Another option you can do while supervising your baby is to prop them up on their sides for a nap. There are sleep positioners available that will help a baby to stay up on their side. Always watch to make sure your baby has not fallen over or slipped into a face first position.

      If you think your baby's head has already started to form a flat spot there are positioning helmets that can help. Check with your doctor to see if this may be an option for your child.

      Give your baby some lounge time in a bouncy seat. Bouncy seats are usually soft, padded material and will not create the same force on your child's head as a mattress or play yard.

      Put your baby in a baby carrier throughout the day so they are not always laying down. This will keep them upright. It is good for your baby to have the close bonding time that a carrier provides.
