How to Make a Discipline Chart for a Child
A parent must provide discipline in order to raise well-adjusted children. While you may not think of discipline as an enjoyable task, you can make it easier on yourself and your child by making a discipline chart. You should make a discipline chart for a child who is old enough to understand that there are consequences for his actions. A discipline chart should be easy for a child to read and understand. You can involve your child by allowing him to help make his own discipline chart.
Things You'll Need
- Poster board
- Black marker
- Colored markers or crayons
- Stickers
- Straight edge
Instructions
Lay the poster board on a table or the floor. Using the straight edge as a guide, make a horizontal line halfway down the poster board. Make the line all the way across the poster. Use the straight edge again to make two equally spaced vertical lines from the top of the poster board to the horizontal line you just drew. You now have three sections on the top. Use the straight edge to make two more equally spaced vertical lines below the horizontal line. This will give you a total of six sections. At the top of the first section, write, "Monday." Fill in the days of the week for the rest of the sections. The last section will be blank. In the last section, write down a list of rules. These behaviors will cause your child to lose a sticker. If your child can not read yet, draw pictures of the rules to remind your child what types of behavior are unacceptable. Below the rules, write down a list of behaviors that will earn a child a sticker. This could be brushing her teeth or making her bed. Allow your child to use markers or crayons to decorate the discipline chart. This involves your child in the process. Decide on a special treat your child will receive each week if they have a certain number of stickers. Make sure you child knows they need to have that amount of stickers at the end of the week to receive the treat.
