How to Prevent Teens From Committing Crimes

When a child becomes a teenager, he's starting to find his own identity and he also becomes more influenced by his peers, the media and societal pressures in general. As a parent, you can still influence your teen in positive ways and when you instill important values in his life, he may be less likely to turn to crime as a way of gaining acceptance and self-worth. This doesn't mean that the teen won't rebel at all if you do this, but it will at least lay a strong moral foundation for him to build his life upon.

Provide a stable family life for your teen. Set aside occasional weekends to bond with your teen by taking her to outside activities, having informal conversations with her at home, cooking special meals together or playing board games together. Also discuss with your teen what your expectations and goals are for them, and assure them of your love and support.

Find someone to mentor your teen. If your teenage son's father is not around, bring him to your father or older male relative to keep your son on the right path. Or if your father or male relatives live out of town, enroll your son in a local mentoring program where he can get extra guidance. Tell the program director some details about your son and ask what services they offer to teens and their families.

Encourage your teen to get involved in activities. If you notice that your daughter has a talent for art, enroll her in some free art classes at the local community center. Or if your son needs to build his social skills and your friend also has a teenage son, arrange for both of them to spend occasional weekends together playing sports in the park or hanging out at the skating rink.
