How to Raise a 10-Year-Old Boy

When raising a 10-year-old boy, you want to teach not only how to do chores or get along with others but also traits such as courage, assertiveness, respect for women, and integrity. When a boy learns this at home by your example, he likely will behave this way as an adult. You also want to be patient and not belittle your son's worth when he fails in his tasks.

Instructions

    • 1

Be the example of the person you want him to be. If you want your son to respect women as an adult, then show respect for your wife and other females by not physically abusing them or belittling their character in front of others. Or if you want your son to build a strong work ethic, let him help you with weekend chores, or let him cut the neighbors' grass for money.

    • 2

Discipline your son when he misbehaves. If your son stole his older brother's weekly allowance and bought snacks with it, tell him that his actions were wrong and that you will not tolerate his disregard for other people's things. Then make him pay the brother back by giving the brother his weekly allowance.

    • 3

Encourage and compliment him. If your son is struggling with math, but he's meeting with his teacher after school, tell him that you're proud of him for wanting to do better and that you believe that he will progress. Or if your son doesn't talk back to you the way he used to, let him know you appreciate his respect for you as a parent.

    • 4

Surround boys with positive male figures. For example, if his father is in prison but you have some uncles who live near you, bring your son to their homes a few times a month so the uncles can mentor him and keep him on the right track.
