How to Help Children Fall Asleep with a Water Fountain
Some kids seem to fight sleep with everything they have, and parents may be desperate for a solution to get them to go to sleep easier and to stay asleep longer. Many parents find success with machines that play white noise or calming sounds such as running water or rain. The sound of running water can be soothing for children, helping them to drift off to sleep. An indoor water fountain can give kids the real thing right in their room, creating a relaxing environment and enhancing the decor.
Things You'll Need
- Indoor water fountain
- Cord cover
- Algaecide
Instructions
Select an indoor water fountain that suits the decor in your child's room and fits the space. Many types of indoor water fountains are available, including small fountains that you can put on a side table or large, stone fountains you can mount on the wall. Set up the water fountain in a location your child cannot reach. You may have to put the fountain on a tall bookcase or a wall shelf. If you choose a wall-mounted fountain, be sure to hang it high enough to be out of your child's reach. Protect the cord on the fountain. Your child could use the cord to pull down the fountain, which could cause serious injury. Use a cord protector to attach the cord to the wall or the floor, or secure the cord behind other furniture. Turn on the fountain only at night time. Teach your child to link the sound of the fountain with bed time so it creates a positive sleep association. Adjust the flow of the fountain if it is too loud and distracts your child from sleeping. Treat the fountain with the manufacturer-recommended cleaner or algaecide to ensure that no unhealthy bacteria forms. Add a few drops once a week, or as directed by the manufacturer. Check the water level in the fountain regularly to ensure it stays full. You don't want your child to wake up in the night because the fountain ran out of water and stopped working.
