Pretzel Counting
-
Use stick pretzels as a tool to help children learn to add, subtract and count. Give each of the children a small bowl that contains five pretzel sticks. Place all of the children into pairs and set each pair at their own table or designate an area on the floor for each. On go, inform each of the children to add up certain numbers of pretzel sticks. For instance, the children need to use all of their sticks to find a way to come up with the number four. This could be mean one child in the pair placing four sticks onto the floor or each of the kids could set out two of her pretzels and inform the teacher they can add up to the number four. The children receive one point for coming up with the correct answer and an extra point for using addition or subtraction. The kids with the most points at the end of five to 10 rounds wins a prize.
Hang the Pretzel
-
Divide all of the children into pairs. Hand each of the pairs a small bowl that contains 10 to 20 small twisted hard pretzels and a candy cane. One of the children in each pair is to hold the candy cane in his mouth while the other child hangs as many pretzels as possible onto the candy cane in 30 seconds. The children will then switch places and the game is played for another 30 seconds. Te kids that successfully hang the most pretzels onto the candy cane in the time allotted win a prize.
Pretzel Shapes
-
Give each of the children a bowl of pretzels sticks and a bowl of miniature marshmallows. Call out a simple shape, such as a triangle, or square and on go inform each of the children to use the pretzels and marshmallows to make the shape. The first child to create the shape with the pretzels and marshmallows wins. The children can also use the pretzels, miniature marshmallows to create a self portrait onto a piece of poster board. The children should create a basic human shape by gluing the pretzels and marshmallows, which should be the joints, onto the poster board with white glue. Markers can then be used to create eyes, hair or anything else the children want.
Pretzel Creation
-
Give each of the children a large, soft pretzel on top of a piece of wax paper. Set the children at a table that is filled with treats and goodies to cover the pretzel, including small candies, sprinkles, different colors of frosting, gel icing and melted chocolate for any older children. Give each of the kids five minutes to decorate the pretzel in an interesting way, such as creating a pretzel monster or making a pretzel Christmas tree. Once the time is completed, the child with the best pretzel creation wins.
