Why Are Children Enthusiastic?
Children possess a natural curiosity about the world around them from the moment they are born. Babies utilize all their senses to examine what is within their reach. Toddlers and preschoolers demonstrate a need to explore and make sense of their world by asking many "why?" questions. As children get older, they become connected to and invested in what interests them most.

Children Are Born Curious
-
Each day brings about a new learning experience for your child. Today many children have instant access to gaining knowledge and being entertained with iPads, e-readers, smartphones and a plethora of available apps. Despite all these available tools, not all children remain curious and enthusiastic throughout adolescence. You can nurture your child̵7;s imagination by regularly reading to him, playing different games, going for a walk and pointing out different details in nature, allowing him to explore while ensuring his safety and asking him inquisitive questions that start with ̶0;Why...?̶1; and ̶0;What do you think...?̶1;
Curiosity Paves the Way for Confidence
-
Curiosity drives children to continue exploring in depth and trying new things. These new experiences help children feel connected and that they have control over their world. However, there will be a time when your child will struggle with solving a problem. Encourage her to figure things out on her own while offering support if she seeks it. Avoid telling her, ̶0;You̵7;re doing it wrong. Let me do it for you,̶1; as that will create a sense of incompetency. Kids will feel a sense of satisfaction and an increase in confidence knowing they solved a problem independently.
Confident Children Are Motivated Learners
-
Confident children are generally more eager to learn different things; they're more curious, more enthusiastic and creative. Introducing new, enriching experiences to your children helps generate confidence and builds on their previous successes. A confident child has a strong sense of self-esteem among his peers and is able to build positive relationships, perform better academically and develop a healthy sense of self, which he will carry with him into adulthood.
Parental Support of Developing Enthusiasm
-
As a parent, you can foster your children̵7;s enthusiasm by seeking out opportunities and activities to expand on their interests. Allow your children to investigate, discover, problem-solve and invent things. Make your home a rich learning environment and provide games that use numbers, letters and words that will help children accomplish different problem-solving tasks. On the Nashville Parent website, editor Susan Day shares what author Richard Lavoie emphasizes in his book, "The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child," the importance of communicating your areas of interest with your children. When your kids feel your passions in life, they tend to follow suit and share enthusiasm with you.
