How to Become a Big Brother

Every young man needs positive and effective male modeling to grow into a healthy and productive member of society. One of the most consistent and long lasting surrogate male role modeling programs is the Big Brother program. This article explains how to get involved.

      Fill out an application either in person at a Big Brother office or online. The application will ask you to provide some basic information about yourself, three personal references and an employer reference. A background check with also be performed.

      Arrange for an interview either in person or online. Should you decide to do the online version of the interview, you will be required to first attend an information meeting where a username and password will be provided. The username and password are valid for seven days after your orientation, so you must complete the interview in one session.

      Set up a home visit with a case manager. These visits are designed to make sure you are ready to become a volunteer. The goal of the visit is to answer questions, gather more information about you and ensure that your home is a safe place for a child to visit.

      Go through the matching process. Once accepted, your case manager will begin searching for prospective little brothers for you. Matching will be based on common interests and other measures that are important to you and the prospective youngster. Once the case manager has identified potential little brothers for you, you will be contacted to go over their profiles. After you choose your little brother, the case manager will contact the parent or guardian of the child and confirm the match.

      Meet your little brother. After the introductions are made and the final paperwork is completed, you and your little brother will be cleared for your first outing, which is usually a short activity to help begin your friendship. Your case manager can help with ideas if you need them. You and your little brother will meet weekly from then on.
