How to Find Out Why My Baby Is So Fussy

All babies fuss. Some do more than others, but there is usually a reason for their cranky ways. As a parent or caregiver, it is your responsibility to find out what's bothering them. Sometimes, this is not as easy as it sounds. However, most times it is possible to discover the cause and soothe the baby. Chances are this will not happen on your first attempt, but if you keep trying, you will eventually get to the root of the issue.

Things You'll Need

  • Diapers
  • Breast milk or formula
  • Swaddling blanket
  • Pacifier
  • Baby swing

Instructions

  1. Reasons to fuss

A dirty diaper may be to blame.

Check her diaper. Many babies are sensitive to wet or dirty diapers and will fuss until the diaper is changed. Make sure the top of it is not rubbing against an umbilical cord stub and there is no sign of diaper rash.

Some babies need to eat more than others.

Feed the baby. Some babies need to eat more frequently than others. Many babies do not follow a feeding schedule and get very cranky when hungry.

Swaddling can provide comfort for cranky babies.

Check the baby's blanket. Most newborns and infants like to be wrapped tightly, or swaddled. It is soothing for them. If your baby's blanket is loose, or she is not wrapped at all, place her with her head on one corner of the blanket. Pull the left corner across her body. Pull the bottom corner up over her body and the right corner tightly across her body. Tuck the right corner in so it is secure and she is swaddled. On the other hand, if she is tightly wrapped, loosen the blanket so she can move around a bit.

Pacifiers can bring comfort to a fussy baby.

Let the baby suck. It is a self-soothing action that all babies do, whether it is on a breast, with a pacifier or a thumb.

Movement can work wonders for some unhappy babies.

Put the baby in motion. If she is fussy when laying on her blanket, put her in a baby swing, rock her in a chair, or take her for a car ride. This often soothes a baby and will sometimes help her sleep.

When all else fails, bring a fussy baby to the doctor.

Take her to the doctor. If you can not soothe your baby and she is extraordinarily fussy, call your pediatrician. Do not hesitate to bring her in. It could be as simple as a tummy ache, but it could also be a medical issue that needs professional intervention.
