How to Get a Baby to Crawl
The encouragement that your baby receives from you is a key part of trying to get him or her to crawl. There are steps that you can take to help make the learning process of crawling easier for your baby.
Things You'll Need
- Hand towel
Instructions
Lay your baby on the floor in the tummy lying position. Carpet is best for this if available. Roll up a hand towel to form a round pillow. Place it under his upper body with his arms hanging over the top. The towel should hold him up just enough that his elbows can lightly touch the floor. This step helps to get your baby used to holding himself up, which is necessary before he can crawl. Sit in front of her. Lower your face to her level. Give her lots of attention and talk to her. This can encourage her to stay in the tummy lying position for longer periods of time. Remove the towel after he has learned to hold himself up. Continue to encourage the tummy lying position. Place a hand behind her feet. This gives your baby something to push off of if she wants to crawl forward. Put a toy in front of him. It should be just out of reach. Your baby learns that to get to the toy, he has to move himself forward. Many different items can be used for this besides toys. For example, if he likes to play with your cell phone and you are okay with it, put the phone in front of him. You can even use yourself to get your baby to crawl to you.
