How to Make a Crinkle Sensory Baby Toy
Baby toys are designed to stimulate visual, auditory and sensory perception. Crinkle toys are highly stimulating, since they appeal to the senses of touch, sight and sound. Crinkle toys can be made from just a few basic materials, most of which you may already have at home. There is very minor stitch work involved in this project, making it an easy one for a beginner at sewing.
Things You'll Need
- Heavy plastic wrapper
- Flannel fabric
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- Ribbon
Instructions
Cut a 6-by-6-inch square of heavy plastic wrapper or other crinkly-sounding material. Baby wipes packages are ideal, since they are thick and noisy. You can also use thick cellophane. Cut two 6-by-6-inch squares of flannel fabric. Sandwich the plastic wrapper inside the two squares of flannel. If the flannel is printed on one side, face the printed sides outward. Align the edges of the three layers. Pin the sides to keep the layers in place. Sew a quarter-inch hem all the way around the square. Sew each of the four edges. Cut four 3-inch pieces of ribbon to attach to the crinkle toy for extra visual appeal. Place the edge of each ribbon along a corner of the square, so that a ribbon hangs diagonally from each corner. Stitch the ribbons on to the fabric.
