How to Cure Gas in Babies
If your baby has gas, it can cause her pain and discomfort as her little body isn̵7;t equipped to work out gas as quickly as older children and adults. Treating gas will not only ensure her comfort, but yours too, as you can both rest easier. If you notice your baby is flatulent, fussy, kicking her legs or vomiting, gas is a probable culprit, but thankfully there are helpful cures.
Things You'll Need
- Gripe water
- Washcloth
Instructions
Give your baby gripe water. Gripe water is an all-natural treatment that uses calming ingredients such as fennel, chamomile and ginger to soothe upset stomach and cramps. Do not use gripe water with sodium bicarbonate. Stick with oil-based, FDA-approved brands. Read the instructions thoroughly for safe and proper administration. As with anything you give your baby, there is a risk of allergic reaction. When in doubt, consult your pediatrician first. Burp your baby for 10 minutes to attempt to release any gas present in her stomach. Hold her so that her abdomen is pressed lightly against your shoulder and gently pat her back. Place your baby on her back on a clean blanket. Hold her legs out gently. Move her right leg up slowly and lightly into her abdomen, then slowly hold it out straight. Do the same with her left leg. Alternate between right and left legs in a gentle, slow bicycle-pedaling motion. This method helps push out gas. Do this for 10 minutes. Massage the baby's tummy with gentle pressure and circular motions. This can help to breakup and release gas, as well as ease pain. Place a soothing sound maker or talk to her in a calming voice to further ease her upset and help keep her calm. Place a warm washcloth atop your little one̵7;s stomach. This can help treat abdominal discomfort as she tries to work out the gas. Ensure the cloth is warm, not hot. Alternatively, give the baby a warm bath to help alleviate cramps.
