What Baby Supplies Do You Need Before Baby Is Born?

Before you bring your newborn baby home, you must have an approved car seat or you can't make the trip from the hospital to home. Once you get home, there should be a cradle, crib, bassinet, or other appropriate baby bed with linens and light-weight blankets (or sleep sacks). A small tub is nice for bathing, but many new parents use the kitchen sink. Many of these items and more are given to expectant parents at baby showers. There are many supplies you need before the baby arrives.

  1. Clothing

    • Baby clothes you receive at your baby shower are adorable. Yet, what a newborn needs most are comfortable, soft nightgowns. Babies are changed frequently throughout the day and easy access for diaper changes is a plus. Baby clothes are typically sized by age, yet this may not accurately reflect the size needed. A large newborn baby may need to wear clothes sized for a 3-month-old. Soft socks or booties are also a good idea to keep tiny feet warm. If you are using cloth diapers, a supply of plastic-like slip-on underpants will also be needed. A stack of receiving blankets should also be on hand.

    Diapers

    • Cloth or disposable diapers should be ready for your baby's arrival. If you are using cloth diapers, you'll need diaper pins. A diaper pail is a must. If the nursery has a changing table ready, you won't hurt your back during the countless diaper changes. Cream for diaper rash should also be on hand, but before using any creams, powders, or lotions, check with your pediatrician on what would be the best choice.

    Feeding

    • If a baby is being breast-fed, many people assume there is no reason to have bottles or formula in the house. But there should be bottles, nipples, bottle brushes, and formula ready, even if the baby will be breast-fed. Check with your pediatrician to find out what brand of formula would be the best choice. And if the mother intends to pump her breasts to have extra milk on hand, add a breast pump to the list.

    Miscellaneous Items

    • While not all parents approve of pacifiers, it is a good idea to have a supply ready for your baby's arrival. If the baby relies on a pacifier for comfort, and you only have one and it is misplaced, you will regret not having a spare. Baby soap and shampoo, along with soft washcloths, should also be added to your inventory. A box of nutritious energy bars should also be included--for the parents, who may need a quick pick-me-up when there is no time to cook.

    • Your beautiful baby is born, and you want to share the news with the world -- or at the very least, a few of your closest friends and family members. Printed birth announcements are the traditional choice, but word spreads quickly -- especially among
    • When you bring your new bundle of joy into the world, all you can think about is how precious she is and how lucky you are to have her. Then, one day the crankiness starts, and you wonder what happened to your little angel. Thumbing through parenting
