How to Give a Baby a Bath
Bath time is soothing for your newborn and gives him time to relax while getting clean. Babies should be given baths no more than every two to three days, since more frequent bathing can dry out their sensitive skin. Once your baby's umbilical cord has healed, as well as his circumcision if he's had one, he's ready for tub baths. Clean his diaper area, neck and folds in between his skin with a wipe or damp cloth in between baths to keep these areas from getting too dirty. Bath time should be an enjoyable bonding experience between you and your child, so relax and enjoy the memories you're making.
Things You'll Need
- Infant tub
- Small cup
- Washcloth
- Baby soap
- Hooded towel
Instructions
Gather your supplies. Get everything that you'll need right by the tub or sink since you can't step away once you put your baby in the tub. Fill the tub or sink with a few inches of lukewarm water. Test the water temperature with your hand before putting your baby in. Undress and lower your baby into the water while supporting his head. Use a cup to pour warm water on his body to prevent him from getting too cold. Dip the washcloth in the warm water and wipe your baby's face with plain water. Wash his body with soapy water, being sure to clean the creases formed by skin folds, where moisture can build up. Use baby shampoo to wash his hair last. Only use a small drop, and take care to avoid getting it in or around his eyes. Rinse all the soap off of your baby with warm water. Wrap him in a hooded towel and pat dry. Apply lotion to his skin to prevent it from drying out, and then dress him. Previous:How to Cure Gas in Babies
