How to Prepare For a Hike With a Toddler
Toddlers are naturally curious, so hitting the hiking trail is a way to encourage that exploration while getting fresh air and exercise. But that same curiosity likely means many stops along the way to investigate rocks, leaves, flowers and wildlife. Your little one's short legs and short attention span also factor into the decision to hike with him. Before you set out with your toddler, take your time planning the distance, location and packing list so you don't end up with a hiking horror story.

Instructions
Practice a hike through your neighborhood to get an idea of how your toddler might handle a real hike. Strolling down your block isn't quite the same as hiking, but you'll get an idea of how your toddler handles walking or riding while you are on foot. Scope out potential trails before your bring your toddler along. She's likely to want to walk at least part of the time, so find a trail that is relatively flat and even. Look for sights she'll find interesting, such as a stream or large trees. Stick to a trail close to home so you can make it a short and sweet trip if it doesn't go well. Schedule the hike at a time when your toddler is alert and content. Hitting the trail right before his nap time or lunchtime increases the chances of crankiness or a temper tantrum. Decide if your child is going to walk or ride on the hike. Riding options include a backpack carrier or a jogging stroller if the terrain isn't too rough. Her age, the terrain and her personality determine how much she'll want to walk. Even if she wants to hike on her own, have a backup plan in case her legs get tired before you return to the starting point. Pack a backpack with essentials, even if you'll only hike for a short time. If your toddler wears diapers, bring plenty of extra diapers and wipes, along with a changing pad or small blanket for diaper changes. Pack snacks that are easy to eat and aren't messy. Bring plenty of water in a cup with a lid so your little one doesn't get soaked when he takes a drink. Pack a change of clothes and extra layers in case he gets muddy or cold. Include sunscreen, insect repellent and a first aid kit to patch up any scrapes he may get on the trails. Dress your adventurous toddler in clothes suitable for the activity. Long pants and long sleeves protect her skin from sticks, rocks, bugs, weeds and the sun. She should wear closed-toed shoes or sneakers that are comfortable. A hat keeps the sun and bugs away from her head. If the weather is cool, add a jacket for warmth.
