How to Set Up Bed Rails

When your child has outgrown his crib but isn't quite ready to sleep in a big bed on his own, bed rails can help keep him safe and secure in just about any bed. Toddler beds frequently come with built-in bed rails, but many parents choose to skip the toddler bed and put their child straight into a twin or double bed. Many different styles of bed rails can be purchased that install easily on almost any type of bed.

Instructions

Assemble your bed rail according to the instructions that came with it. Most of the popular brands of bed rails can be assembled without tools as parts attach together using locking pins and sliding channels.

    • 2

Insert both support arms of your bedrail between the mattress and the box spring of the child's bed. Ensure that the top edge of the rail lines up with the child's shoulder when lying in bed, with at least a nine inch space between the headboard and the bed rail. If your bed rail has a fold-down capability, it is easier to have it in the fold-down position while installing it on the bed.

Push the support arms in as far as possible to make the rail lie snugly and securely against the side of the bed. If the bed rail was in the fold-down position for installation, return it to the locked, upright position.
