Baptism Outfits for Toddler Boys to Wear in the Winter

Baptism is the first rite of initiation in many Christian churches. Choosing what to wear for the ceremony is important; however, it's typically a parent's choice when it comes to baptizing a child unless a particular church requires that your child wear a special baptismal robe. If it's a winter baptism, you'll want your toddler to stay warm and be comfortable.

  1. Traditional Christening Gown

    • Perhaps you want your child to wear a traditional christening gown for the baptism ceremony. Some families even pass gowns down from one generation to the next. Since christening gowns are typically designed for infants, a gown can pose a problem for a toddler. Aside from the fact that a toddler simply might not want to wear a gown, the long skirt of a traditional gown might trip a walking toddler. To remove this hazard, consider taking the skirt up with a growth tuck. This is a simple pleat that shortens it. Just fold the skirt over with the wrong sides together and stitch all the way around the skirt an inch from the fold. You can add several tucks to shorten the skirt to a manageable length. If you want to pass the gown to another family member, you can easily remove these stitches to release the tucks. Keep in mind that a gown with an open bottom isn't exactly warm. You might want to put white tights or white knit pants under the gown for warmth. Also cover your toddler's feet in white socks and shoes. Once the ceremony is over, you'll likely want to let your toddler slip into something more comfortable.

    Baptismal Suit

    • If your little boy objects to wearing a dress, consider dressing him in a baptismal suit for the ceremony. Generally, you'll want a white suit of clothing since white represents the purity of baptism. You can create your own suit by pairing a white shirt with white pants, socks and shoes. You can add a white tie and white jacket to complete the ensemble. The layers of a christening suit will help keep your little boy warm as he is baptized. It also helps set him apart from others in baptismal pictures.

    Church Clothes

    • While the traditional color of baptism is white, your child can wear the clothing you choose. This might be a warm sweater and long pants or a suit of any color you find appealing. You might also consider a smocked suit or a fancier shirt with a wide, Fauntleroy collar. Clothing that's simply out of the ordinary can help set the day apart from other days while still giving your child a contemporary look.

    Baptismal Robe

    • Some churches require that those being baptized -- including children -- wear special baptismal robes. The robe is nothing more than a white or off-white gown that looks like a choir robe.
