How to Keep an 18 Month Old Entertained

Most 18-month-old children are full of curiosity and playfulness. You can have hours of fun playing with a little one of this age. The good news is that you don't have to have any special abilities or expensive toys in order to keep an 18 month old entertained. You can have a great time together using simple games and inexpensive toys. Not only will you and your little one have a good time, but you also will promote his social, mental and physical development.

Things You'll Need

  • Crayons
  • Finger paint
  • Paper
  • Large blocks
  • Large plastic or wooden beads
  • String
  • Large beach ball
  • Shape sorter
  • Pots and pans
  • Wooden utensils

Instructions

      Color or fingerpaint with your child.

      Stack large blocks on top of each other. Don't worry if they fall. Your 18 month old probably will be delighted!

      Give your child some large plastic or wooden beads and a piece of string. Show her how to put them on and let her experiment with putting them on and taking them off again.

      Toss or kick a large beach ball back and forth.

      Stomp in puddles together.

      Play with shape sorters. If you don't have one, cut holes in the lid of a shoebox and slip wooden or plastic blocks through the holes.

      Pull out numerous pots, pans and containers. Use plastic or wooden utensils to play them as "instruments" in a noisy rhythm band.
