February Toddler Art Activities

The cold winter month of February is ideal for indoor craft activities. Ideas centered on Valentine and President's Day or the winter snow can flex your child's creative mind.

  1. I "Heart" You

    • Valentine's Day is a great theme for crafts.

      Create a cute Valentine's day art project by using simple, everyday items. Use regular paper plates, markers or crayons, glue, construction paper, yarn and heart-shaped cookie cutters to design this project. Have your child use a crayon of his choice to color the paper plate. Trace hearts of various sizes on construction paper and cut out. Glue the hearts around the edge of the paper plate. Place a photograph of your child in the middle, punch a hole in the top for string or yarn, and hang the plate wherever your child chooses.

    Hello, Mr. President

    • Making hats with your child is a fun way to celebrate President's Day.

      Teach your child about two famous presidents, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, with these unique crafts. Use a toilet paper tube, black construction paper, scissors and glue to make a black stovepipe hat similar to President Lincoln's. Using the tube as a guide, trace a circle on the paper, adding four small rectangles around the edge. Trace two more circles, making one 1/2 inch larger for the hat's brim. Cut out the larger circles; add some flaps to the smaller, inner circle. Glue the flaps on the circle to the paper tube to create the hat brim. Glue the smaller circle (with the rectangles) to the top of the tube, then cover the tube with black construction paper.

      Create a wig just like George Washington wore with cotton balls, construction paper, glue, string and a paper plate. Use the scissors to round the bottom of a piece of white construction paper and glue to the paper plate. Cover the plate and paper with cotton balls. Use the scissors to poke holes on either side of the plate and use the string to keep the wig hat on your child's head.

    Snow Straws

    • Drinking straws have endless craft possibilities.

      Kids love to drink from a straw, and this craft combines a winter theme with drinking fun. Trace and cut out a snowflake or snowman design from a plastic foam plate or tray. Use markers to draw a face on the snowman or details on the snowflake. Tape the cut-out to the back of the straw, make your child's favorite drink, and enjoy!
