How to Pull an All Nighter for Fun for Teens

Most parents are constantly trying to convince their teens to go to bed at a reasonable hour. But sometimes, an all-night party is the ideal way to celebrate a holiday, special event or big accomplishment. Teens love being allowed to stay up all night with friends, games and refreshments, and parents feel safe and confident knowing that teens are in one place and won't engage in risky behavior. Teen all nighters are also ideal for fundraisers or as a break from studying for a large test.

Consult with your teen. Sit down with your teen and listen to her ideas and opinions. You may not agree with every suggestion, but look for ways to compromise. For instance, if your teen wants alcohol, instead offer nonalcoholic versions of popular cocktails.

    • 2

Write a guest list. A special occasion such as a prom, study break or fundraiser calls for a large guest list. For instance, invite your teen's entire class. For a birthday party, a smaller guest list, with 10 guests or less, is more manageable.

    • 3

Find a venue. If your home is too small, ask if any other teens have large homes and parents willing to host. Venues outside the home are more convenient in terms of noise and size, but may pose transportation issues. For a venue such as a school or church gym or a bowling alley, coordinate safe, reliable transportation.

Write ground rules. For an all night party, setting rules beforehand avoids frustration and risky behavior during the party. Work with teens and other parents to create rules, but focus on safety before compromise. For instance, create a rule that teens cannot leave the party venue before a designated time next morning, must be picked up by parents and cannot bring alcohol or drugs to the all night party.

Purchase supplies. Several days before the party, purchase decorations, refreshments and other necessities, such as plastic cups, plates and utensils. Purchase finger foods and snacks that are easy to eat, as well as breakfast items for the following morning.

Coordinate supervision. For a large party, adult chaperones should be present at all times. For a smaller sleepover, check in with teens at intervals during the night. Take turns with your spouse to work in shifts.
