Things to Do on a Winter Day for Bored Teens

If your teens mope around the house complaining that they are bored during the winter, consider suggesting some fun activities that will get them away from the television and the video games. Although shorter days and cold temperatures can make it harder to find exciting things to do, a little imagination and initiative will keep your teen constructively entertained hours on end.

  1. Ice Skating

    • Winter isn't all bad, and you can remind your teen of that with a trip to the ice skating rink. If your teen has never ice skated before, it will be a particularly exciting experience. Teens place great value on their social life, so including his friends in the skating excursion is an excellent idea.

    Photography

    • Winter landscapes make beautiful photos, and there are very few teens who don't enjoy taking pictures. Give your teen a camera and suggest that she look for good shots around the neighborhood. Later, have the pictures developed and display the pictures on the wall to show off your teen's artistic abilities.

    Cooking

    • Ask your teen to cook the family dinner one night. Tell her that she can make whatever she wants, no matter how strange or unhealthy. Help her as necessary, but give her a chance to be independent. Once your teen serves the meal, ask all family members to give their opinion. Set the tone by beginning with a positive, light-hearted review of your teen's cooking.

    Sleepover

    • Allow your teen's friends to come over for a sleepover. Prepare for this by taking your teen to a movie rental store and grocery store. Allow him to choose whatever movies and snacks he wants, so long as his requests are reasonable. To make it an extra special night, abolish bedtime. Your teen might be exhausted the next day, but his improved mood will make it worth it.

    Volunteer Work

    • Encourage your teen to volunteer her time at the local library, animal shelter, rest home or food bank. As teens start to think of others before themselves, they will focus less on how bored they are. This is an excellent way to occupy your teen while teaching a valuable lesson about generosity and thoughtfulness.
