How to Sew a Crib Skirt

A crib skirt is an added accent to your baby's bedding that hangs down below the crib, similar to a bed skirt. Most bedding sets come with a bed skirt; however, if your crib is not a standard size or you choose to make your own bedding, you may need to make your own skirt. Making a crib skirt is easy and inexpensive. You can complete your crib skirt at home, even if you do not have expert sewing skills.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Muslin
  • Fabric
  • Straight pins

Instructions

    • 1

Use a measuring tape to measure the sides of your mattress supports. Add 1 inch to both measurements to allow for seam allowance. Some supports are wood, some are metal. You are looking for the length and width of the entire support.

    • 2

Cut a piece of muslin to match your measurements. You can use other fabric if you prefer; however, muslin is inexpensive and easy to work with.

    • 3

Cut four lengths of fabric. Each should be 12 inches long. If you want your skirt to hang lower, you can add additional length. Two pieces should be your width measurement and two pieces should be your length measurement. The fabric you use is up to you. Choose something that coordinates with the rest of your bedding.

    • 4

Lay your muslin out on a work surface. Turn your lengths of fabric upside down. Pin the lengths of fabric to your piece of muslin using straight pins. The long pieces should match your long sides of muslin and the shorter pieces should match your shorter sides. By laying the fabric upside down, you will ensure the seams are on the underside of the skirt.

    • 5

Use your sewing machine to stitch along the seams where your muslin and your fabric meet. Remove the straight pins once all sides are sewn.

    • 6

Fold the bottom edges of your skirt over 1/4 of an inch. Use straight pins to secure them. Use your sewing machine to stitch these hems. Remove the straight pins once the hems are sewn.

    • 7

Iron your crib skirt to remove wrinkles and place your completed crib skirt on your mattress support. Then place the mattress on top.
