How Long Does Morning Sickness Usually Last?

More than two-thirds of pregnant women experience morning sickness. The symptoms may be as light as vague queasiness; they may so extreme that a woman is unable to function. Fortunately, for the vast majority of these women, morning sickness usually ends early in the second trimester of pregnancy.

    • Higher than normal rates of hormonal activity are thought to be the main cause of morning sickness. Women who are prone to motion sickness or have sensitive digestive tracts may also experience symptoms.

    Onset

    • Morning sickness may begin as early as two weeks into pregnancy. However, most women begin to feel nausea around the six week mark.

    Duration

    • For the majority of women, symptoms will taper off 12 to 14 weeks into their pregnancies. Some women will continue to be sick into the third trimester. Many women will continue to feel mild symptoms when exposed to certain smells or after eating.
