How to Cure a Stuffy Nose During Pregnancy

When you become pregnant, hormones in your body begin to change. One of those changes is the increase in blood flow to the respiratory system. This can lead to some congestion which results in a stuffy nose. When you are pregnant, you are limited in what medications you can take. Too many medications can harm unborn babies. Still, there are some things you can do to relieve the stuffiness.

Things You'll Need

  • Steam
  • Vapor rub
  • Saline nasal drops
  • Vaporizer

Instructions

    • 1

Take a hot shower or hot bath first thing in the morning. The steam from the hot water will liquify the mucus in your nose. This will cause it to either run out of your nose or down your throat. You will then be able to breathe normally again. This is a temporary solution.

Place a little bit of a vapor rub on your chest. If you have sensitive skin, you will want to wipe some of it on your shirt. The vapors will rise up and unclog your nose. You can use this throughout the day, or at night before you go to bed.

    • 3

Apply three saline nasal drops in each nostril while your head is tilted back and to the side. The saline drops eat away at the mucus and break it up so that you can breathe again. Saline drops are safe to use several times throughout the day.

    • 4

Keep your head elevated. You may need to prop your head up with some pillows when you sleep. This will keep the mucus from pooling in one place and staying there.

    • 5

Use a vaporizer. This works the same way that the steam and vapor rub do. You can use the vaporizer for hours at a time, including throughout the night so that you can get a good night sleep. Fill the vaporizer with water, and add some vapor rub to the designated spot on the machine. Plug it in and wait for the steam to start.
