How to Deal With Morning Sickness

Many pregnant women experience the nausea and vomiting that comes with morning sickness during the first part of pregnancy. Although these symptoms often subside on their own around week 12, those weeks may seem to creep by very slowly if you can̵7;t find relief. Fortunately, you can try any number of natural remedies to help you deal, and to feel better.

Things You'll Need

  • Dry, bland foods
  • Water
  • Ginger foods
  • Lemons
  • Vitamin B6 supplements
  • Sea bands

Instructions

    • 1

Get plenty of rest. When you awaken in the morning, allow extra time to get up slowly. Sitting up quickly or jumping out of bed may make you feel worse. The American Pregnancy Association suggests having crackers or dry cereal next to your bed to nibble on as soon as you wake up. Naps are great throughout the day, if you can sneak them in, but don̵7;t lie down right after a meal -- this can cause heartburn or nausea.

    • 2

Eat frequent, light meals throughout the day, if you can. You don̵7;t want to get too full or really hungry. Eat something upon waking up, even if you feel nausea. Dry toast or pretzels can help battle morning sickness. Fresh fruits and vegetables may stay down. Avoid fatty or spicy foods and anything that smells weird to you. Bland foods seem to help some pregnant women avoid morning sickness symptoms. If hot foods have an overpowering smell, opt for cold foods instead. Try not to skip meals.

    • 3

Sip water throughout the day. Try to drink a glass of water about a half-hour before a meal to aid in digestion and prevent you from eating too much.

    • 4

Try some ginger. Ginger tea, ginger ale, pickled ginger, ginger snaps, candied ginger, ginger powder or fresh ginger may help ease the symptoms associated with morning sickness.

    • 5

Add some freshly squeezed lemon juice to some water and sip this drink. Even just smelling a lemon may help.

    • 6

Take a vitamin B6 supplement. A 50-milligram dose daily is sufficient.

    • 7

Get some fresh air whenever you can. Taking a stroll outside or even sitting outdoors may help relieve nausea.

    • 8

Consider acupressure, acupuncture or sea bands to help battle morning sickness. Talk to your health care provider about your options.
