Safest Place for Car Seats
The American Academy of Pediatrics says the safest place for car seats is the back seat, whether you have a newborn in an infant seat or a 6-year-old in a booster seat.

Infants
-
Infants should ride in a rear-facing car seat, in the back seat, until they weigh at least 20 pounds and are past their first birthday, the academy says.
Toddlers
-
After age 1, children may use a front-facing car seat in the back seat until they grow out of the seat or surpass its weight limit, usually 40 to 80 pounds.
Young Children
-
Children who aren't tall enough for seat belts to fit properly should ride in the back seat in a booster seat. Kids need boosters until they are about 4 feet, 9 inches tall, the pediatrics academy says.
Tethers
-
Since 2000, U.S. vehicles have been equipped with anchors for car seat tethers, which help keep the seat in position in a crash. Locate the tether anchors in your vehicle before you install a car seat.
Air Bag
-
Front-seat air bags can injure children younger than 13 if they deploy. Never place a rear-facing infant seat in front of an airbag, and don't allow other children to ride in the front unless the air bag is turned off.
