Things to Pack for a Short Trip With a Child
Rather than rushing at the last minute, prepare ahead of time for the short trip with your child. Make a list to ensure you are packing all the essential items. What you need to pack will vary depending on the age of your child, your destination and whether or not the trip will include an overnight stay.

Bring enough clothes, socks, underwear and pajamas for each day and night you will be traveling. Prepare for accidents and spills by packing a couple of extra outfits. Pack shoes that will coordinate with several outfits. Consider packing a light sweater or an outfit for warmer weather in case of temperature changes. Bringing plastic bags can come in handy to separate dirty clothes from clean ones in a suitcase. A toothbrush is necessary to pack along with such items as travel-size shampoo, conditioner, soap and toothpaste, all of which are necessary for overnight trips.
Destination Items
-
When traveling with a child to a warm destination, pack sunblock, a swimsuit, a hat and sunglasses. If you are traveling to a cold location, pack warm coats, boots, a scarf and mittens. Umbrellas and raincoats are other beneficial items to pack in case of inclement weather. A cooler, blankets, pillows and towels should be packed for a long car ride. If you are traveling by plane, you might need photo identification for your child, depending on his age. When traveling to another country, you will need to have your child̵7;s passport and other necessary travel documents such as a visa.
Baby Items
-
Traveling with a baby is different than traveling with an older child. If you are traveling with a baby, you will need to bring a car seat, collapsible crib and stroller. Stock your diaper bag with all the necessary items you will need daily, such as diapers, diaper cream, wipes and bottles. Also pack plastic bags to dispose of dirty diapers. If you are not breastfeeding, pack formula so your baby can eat. Pacifiers and an inflatable bathtub are other items to consider taking along on your journey.
Other Items
-
Always bring along your child̵7;s medical necessities, such as medication, insurance cards and information on your child̵7;s medical history. To keep your little one occupied, pack items she can use on the plane, in the car or during her downtime. Items such as activity books or toys can be packed. Tablets, which can be preloaded with games and movies, can also help keep your child entertained on a short trip. Bring along snacks, bottled water, cups with lids and plastic utensils.
