Instructions

    • 1

Teach your child that is okay to ask for help. This is the most vital step. If he/she doesn't understand a problem or a how problem is solved and never asks for help, then he/she may never understand it.

    • 2

Explain to the child that is okay if math doesn't come easy to him/her. Some people are born with this natural ability and some aren't. But then go on and assure the child that this is an ability that can be learned with patience, time and a bit of studying.

    • 3

As a parent, become acquainted with your child's math problems and textbook yourself. This may also mean that you need to brush up on your own math skills first. You need to know what your child is expected to learn before you can help him/her.

    • 4

Ask your child about his/her homework assignments and when tests are usually held. You may also want to discuss this with the child's teacher.

    • 5

Begin to look over the child's homework with him or her. Have him/her show you the problems that he/she is having difficulty solving. Then have him/her show you how he/she is trying to solve them. If their technique is wrong point this out to them by example. But do not give them the answers to the math problems. Let them solve them on their own.

    • 6

Begin quizzing them with math problems before any big tests. Help them solve the problems they are still having difficulty solving.

    • 7

If the math problems are beginning to become difficult even for you or you do not have the time to devote enough of it to the subject each night, consider hiring a math tutor or even an online math tutor. For help in hiring one, you may want to consult your child's teacher for suggestions.
