Things for Kids to Do on the Computer
Even infants are fascinated by the colors on computer screens and the sounds emanating from them. According to Kidsource, appropriate computer activities for kids depends on their age and stage of development, but in general, kids as young as 3 can master basic computer skills. As kids mature, they may become so enthralled with the computer that they want to spend nearly all their free time online. The American Academy of Pediatrics points out concerns about computer use regarding possible neglect of reading, physical exercise and socialization but reminds parents that the biggest concern may be Internet safety.

Preschool Activities
-
Many commercial programs are available commercially for preschoolers, but most computers feature a free paint program (under "accessories") as standard software. Even young children can choose tools and colors and paint unique abstract pictures. Parents may choose to print some of these out for display. Drawing with a mouse will not yield realistic results, but this does not bother preschoolers, who are developing fine motor skills as they make art.
Games
-
Hundreds of thousands of age-appropriate websites are devoted to children, and most of these provide interactive activities. Kids can spend hours playing online games, but some sites require e-mail registration, and parents should be consulted on these. High-skill games may be available for membership fees, and if parents feel these games are appropriate, they can provide an affordable alternative to purchasing games individually.
Music
-
Older kids are interested in downloading popular music and, with appropriate software, can do so online. Parents should supervise all these transactions, especially when credit card information is required. Whether music is downloaded or purchased as a CD, parents should be involved in deciding if the music reflects the values of their family.
Learning
-
Many educational sites offer free online tutoring in specific subject areas. Most of these sites provide interactive and fun ways to improve skills. For example, Cool Math Games offers educational interactive games called Fraction Splat, Map Snaps and Parking Mania. Kids enjoy visiting these sites and learn painlessly as they play.
Research
-
Older kids who need information for research papers have the world at their fingertips when they go online. Teachers may provide handouts on finding authoritative information online and the proper procedure for listing the sources on the student's paper. While many families used to buy a set of encyclopedias for their kids to do research, today that information and much more is available for free online.
