How to Keep Glasses on Kids
Although it can be difficult to accept that your child needs glasses, you can feel positive about your child being able to see clearly with corrective lenses. Encouraging a child to wear glasses, especially an infant or toddler, can be a challenge. As you strive to help your child get used to wearing glasses, use positive reinforcement to get through the transition. With diligent effort and consistent guidelines, you can keep glasses on kids in a positive way.
Things You'll Need
- Elastic straps
- Cable temple frames
Instructions
Select eyeglasses with elastic straps that connect to the frames to hold the eyeglasses in place on a very young child̵7;s face. These glasses can be suitable for infants, toddlers and active children who may have problems with eyeglasses falling off during activity. Choose eyeglasses with special cable temple frames. These frames curl around the ears to hold them in place securely. Cable temple frames can work for toddlers, young children and even older children who live active lifestyles. Fit the glasses on your child with the help of a professional. Make certain that the glasses fit properly and comfortably with no pinching or irritation whatsoever. This is especially important if your child is too young to tell you that the glasses don̵7;t feel comfortable. Lay the ground rules about the glasses with a very young child to help her accept the glasses. Tell your child that parents or adults are the only people that can remove the glasses. This tells her that she, herself, cannot take them off. Other children cannot take the glasses off either. Replace the glasses back on your child immediately if he takes them off. It is important never to let your child take the glasses off -- whether your child removes them to play with them or simply removes them. When the time arrives to remove the glasses, you must remove them -- not your child. Encourage your child to keep the glasses on with positive reinforcement. Distract your child as she gets used to the glasses. Choose fun activities to engage your child while she wears the glasses to keep her busy and to reward her for wearing the glasses. Stop the fun activity immediately if your child removes his glasses. Put the glasses back on and start the activity again. This will positively reinforce having fun with wearing the glasses. It will also show your child that if he takes the glasses off, the fun stops.
