Listening Skills Activities
Listening involves both hearing and understanding. Communication is ineffective when the parties involved have poor listening skills. Listening skills are developed at a young age but can be learned and or corrected at just about any age. There are several activities that can be used to acquire listening skills. Listening skill activities vary by age and maturity and can be practiced alone, with groups or learned through peers and adults.

Talking to children at a young age will help them to develop their listening skills. Describe events and things in detail with small, age-appropriate words at first. Touch items while describing them to grab the young ones' attention. Have them hold the object while talking to them about it. If they are mature enough, ask children to repeat back what has been told to them.

Teens who are involved in sports or clubs are exposed to more opportunities to develop their listening skills as effective communication is necessary for the success of the team. Help teens find a team that is right for them. At home, provide ample opportunities for teen listening skill growth by playing games such as charades, holding mock job interviews and involving them in home remodeling projects that require the ability to follow instructions.
Listening Skills Activity for Adults

Adults can hone their listening skills by sitting quietly with their eyes closed and listening to the sounds around them. Identify as many sounds as possible without looking. Try this technique a few of times each day to get a pulse on current listening skills. Joining a debate team, partaking in group skill building classes or playing audio concentration games online are also great activities that help sharpen listening skills in adults. Remember, listening is not always about what is heard. A lot can be learned by observing body language as well.
