Today more and more adult kids are moving back home. With higher divorce rates, less jobs, and spiraling housing costs, adult kids have no where else to turn. Now the parents are forced to have to adapt to having their grown up kid and their grown up problems back at home. The real battle is figuring out how to do this without allowing their unforeseen life changes cause you to have some of your own.

Set some ground rules. These include expectations and expected rules of conduct. Make sure that you cover subjects like noise levels, staying out all night and overnight guests. Establish an exit plan. You don't have to be mean and give them a specified time to get out ,but it is helpful to set a general time frame in which your adult child is aiming to move out. This will also help them set goals. Help them figure it out. You are still their parents and they do seek your advice. Help them establish a budget and develop a plan that everyone is happy with. Insist that they contribute. You don't have to enslave them, but make them pull their weight including domestic chores, as well as any additional expenses. Create privacy zones by establishing personal space. This will avoid any future tension or conflict and help everyone keep their sanity.
