How to Set Goals for Adult Kids Living at Home

Many kids move back home or never leave, due to situations like financial problems or a bad breakup. Your role as a parent changes when dealing with adult children, though some aspects remain the same. When your adult child is living under your roof, it's your job to help him set goals and establish boundaries and expectations to keep your household running smoothly, and ultimately help him become independent and move out on his own.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your adult child about her short- and long-term goals, dreams, desires and plans. Ask her questions if she seems stuck and has no idea. For example, "Where do you want to live?" or "What do you see yourself doing in five years?"

    • 2

Write down all of his goals. Arrange the list according to the length of time needed for each one. For example, he may want to find gainful employment within three months, buy a car in six and move out in a year. Set a time frame for achieving each goal.

    • 3

Establish rules and a plan for her to accomplish her goals.

    • 4

Collect money for household bills or room and board. If you're financially able, put the money aside for him to use as a deposit and first month's rent when it's time for him to move out. Don't tell him you're keeping the money for him, though, so he's used to the idea that he has to pay rent first.

    • 5

Revisit the list every month or so with your child so you can both stay on the same page and track her progress. Be firm about your rules and boundaries, and the importance of your child working to reach her goals.
