What Should I Pay a Live in Nanny?
If you're not a fan of getting up early and getting your kids ready for daycare, or if you don't like worrying that your childcare provider may show up late, a live-in nanny may be your best caregiving option. But for this arrangement to work, you're going to have to have a spare bedroom, set clear boundaries and offer a competitive salary.

Live-in nannies can be employed on a part-time or full-time basis, but regardless of how many hours they're employed for, room and board is part of their salary package. On average, live-in nannies that work between 45 and 50 hours per week earn between $325 and $800 or more per week. Nannies who work less earn less. Some nannies work a split shift where they're responsible for getting the children off to school in the morning and providing care for them when they return home in the afternoon. Live-in nannies for younger children tend to work five days per week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (see Resources below).

Live-in nannies are hired to live in the home and provide childcare. According to the International Nanny Association, nannies are responsible for undertaking all tasks related to their care of the children (see Resources below). Live-in nannies may bathe, clothe and feed the children in their care. They may also help older children with their homework. Live-in nannies may do the shopping for the family and transport the kids to various events and activities. Live-in nannies are hired to support the parents in raising their children. Live-in nannies who work a split shift or who have time while the children are in school may be asked to run household errands without being additionally compensated.

The more experience and education a nanny has, the higher salary she may command. Live-in nannies who are employed in affluent communities tend to earn more. According to Michelle LaRowe, 2004 International Nanny Association Nanny of the Year, live-in nannies in Wayland, Massachusetts, with over 10 years of experience and a bachelor's degree, for example, may earn over $50,000 per year. The New England states and California tend to have the highest-paid nannies, while rural states such as Maine have the lowest (see Resources below).

Many families believe that because a nanny lives in the home she is responsible and available to provide around the clock care. Families and nannies should have a written work agreement that outlines the hours and days the live-on nanny is on and off duty. This can help to assure that both the nanny and the family have no confusion about expectation. The International Nanny Association offers a nanny/employer work agreement for sale on their website. If you have a live-in nanny and want her to work overtime, she should be paid an hourly rate. By law, live-in nannies must be paid for every hour that they work (see Resources below).

Families must purchase food for the nanny. Many live-in nannies also require that their family provide health insurance, a vehicle for them to drive and a yearly bonus.
