How to Sponsor a Nanny in Canada
The Live-in Caregiver program provides a way for you to hire and sponsor nannies from other countries. The amount of time to bring the nanny over to depends on what country she is coming from. The program creates a win-win situation in that the nanny is caring for your child or children and you are sponsoring her to live in Canada and get her permanent residence. Your nanny will then have the ability to sponsor her own family to come over and live, too.
Things You'll Need
- Labor Market Opinion Application
- Written Employment Contract
Instructions
Advertise for a nanny on the national job bank, newspapers, Internet job sites, etc., for a minimum of 14 calendar days. This is a requirement when applying for the Labor Market Opinion that is part of the Live-In Caregiver Program. Find a nanny through your advertising efforts, word of mouth or nanny agency. Thoroughly check the nanny's background, conduct interviews and call references. Write out an employment contract to submit to Human Resources and Skills Development Canada/Service Canada (HRSDC/SC) and the prospective nanny that you want to hire. According to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada site, the contract must include a fair working arrangement between you and your employer, and mandatory employer-paid benefits, including: transportation to Canada; medical insurance coverage provided from the date of the nanny's arrival until she is eligible for provincial health insurance; workplace safety insurance coverage for the duration of the employment; job duties; hours of work; wages; accommodation arrangements (including room and board); holiday and sick leave entitlements; and termination and resignation terms. You can find a contract template at the Canada immigration site (cic.gc.ca/english/information/offices/missions.asp) . Complete and send in an application for a Labour Market Opinion (LMO), which you can get from the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada/Service Canada (HRSDC/SC). If the employer meets all the HRSDC/SC Live-in Caregiver Program requirements, she will be issued a positive LMO. The positive LMO demonstrates that there is a need for the job in Canada, and you as an employer can proceed to hire and sponsor your nanny. Send a copy of the employment contract to your nanny for her to sign. Ask the nanny to get a work permit through the Canadian visa offices site.
