How to Claim Dependent Care for After School Activities
You can claim expenses for after-school activities for children aged 13 and under. You must have custody of the child to claim after-school dependent care expenses. To claim the credit, the expense must be work-related, meaning that you incurred the expense so that you could work or look for work. According to IRS Code 602, the amount of your tax credit will be a percentage of your dependent care expenses, based on your adjusted gross income.
Instructions
Keep a record of your yearly expenses for after-school dependent care. Child care expenses qualify as a tax deduction and you want to make sure that your totals match your after-school program's records. Ask the program director to fill out Form W-10, also known as the Dependent Care Provider's Identification and Certification. This form will include the provider's taxpayer identification number and address, which you will need when claiming the credit. Provide the after school program's tax identification number and your total yearly expense for after school care on your tax return. Use form 1040A, Schedule 2, Form 2441 or Form 1040 to claim your dependent care credit. According to the IRS, if you "receive dependent care benefits from your employer, you must complete part III of Schedule 2" of Form 1040A or Form 2441.
