Homemade Ink for Children's Fingerprints
Fingerprint art with your child, or your preschool class, is a wonderful and educational experience for all those involved. You can take it one step further and make the ink yourself out of green materials. Some people also take fingerprints and handprints of their children to record their growth or aid in identification in case of abduction.

Making Your Own Ink from Berries
-
Any brightly colored, nonpoisonous berry will do.
Gather about a cup of the berries and smash them through a strainer until you have all the juice on one side. Now add salt and vinegar, about a tablespoon each. The vinegar will ensure that the ink will still retain its nice color instead of becoming brown or black with mold.
This will yield about 4 oz. of ink.
Making Your Own Ink from Walnut Shells-Step One
-
Walnut shells give a rich brown ink.
Gather about 10 walnut shells and crack them up a bit with a hammer. Then put them under a cloth or in a sock and pound away. The more thoroughly you pound, the less dissolving will need to take place later.
Put the shells in a little pot and cook on low for about half an hour. Remove and then let the mixture rest untouched for 12 hours. Add a teaspoon each of vinegar and salt.
This makes about 4 oz.
