Places to Go on Road Trips With Kids
Instead of breaking your budget on pricey airline tickets, take a road trip with your kids and see a slice of Americana that you would otherwise fly over. Whether you are looking for a quick weekend getaway or planning a longer summer vacation, car trips provide your family with the opportunity to spend some time together while getting to your vacation destination.

Camping
-
Taking a car trip to a nearby or destination camping ground can help bring your family closer together and give the little ones the opportunity to learn about natural spaces. When you don't have a lot of time, choose a nearby campground to drive to. Even if you live in a large city, a woodsy campground isn't far away. For example, the New York City/Newburgh KOA campground is roughly an hour's drive outside of New York City. For more of a destination car trip, check out a state or national park.
Sports Trips
-
Hit the road with your little sports-lover and visit a destination athletic attraction. Instead of choosing a vacation spot for the scenery, opt for a sports-themed trek to your family's favorite team's stadium or a sports museum. During summer, you can pack the kids into the car and follow your city's baseball team to a nearby city's park for a game. When football season rolls around, head out to visit a college team's stadium for a weekend car trip getaway. If you want to show your kids a piece of American sports history, take a journey to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York, or Canton, Ohio's Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Urban Trips
-
While camping and more rural types of trips seem natural when it comes to driving, get into the car and go to an urban destination. If you don't want to hear the constant, "Are we there yet?" coming from the backseat, plan your car trip according to proximity to a nearby city. For example, if you live in the northeast, consider going to New York City, or if you are more midwestern, take a trip to Chicago. The added bonus of taking a car trip as part of your city vacation is that you already have a means of transportation to get around town.
One-of-a-Kinds
-
Road trips to record-breaking and totally unusual attractions will make lasting memories for your children. Give the kids something to tell their friends about when school starts. Consider a trip to Clermont, where you'll find Florida's ice-cream-cone-shaped ice cream shop; Cawker City, Kansas, where you'll find the world's largest ball of twine; or the world's largest strawberry in the well-named Strawberry Point, Iowa.
