How to Pack a Child's Bag for an Overnight Stay

Getting ready for a sleepover is an exciting time for a kid. Whether preparing for a prodigious pillow fight, movie marathon or backyard bonfire, it is important that your child have everything he needs when it̵7;s time to hit the hay. Talk to him about any apprehensions he may have about spending the night away from home, and let him know that you are only a phone call away. Remember to get your child̵7;s input when packing his overnight bag.

Things You'll Need

  • Waterproof toiletry bag or zippered plastic bag
  • Two small plastic bags
  • Duffel bag or carry-on suitcase

Instructions

    • 1

Write down a list of everything that your child needs for an overnight adventure. Remember to include pajamas, clothing, toiletries and any special gear, such as a flashlight. Ask the host if you should send bedding, like a sleeping bag and pillow. Consider packing a small thank-you gift that your child can give to the host.

Gather all of the toiletry items in a waterproof toiletry bag or a zippered plastic bag in case of an accidental spill. Pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and shampoo in travel-size containers. Add a hairbrush and hair accessories if your child needs them. Put any necessary medicines in the toiletry bag, along with a note that explains when and how to administer the medication.

Pack sleeping gear in a small plastic bag so that it's easy to find when it's time for lights-out. Place your child̵7;s pajamas and a favorite stuffed animal or blanket to snuggle with in the bag. Include a flashlight and a storybook in case your child needs a little help falling asleep.

Collect any items that your child needs for the following day and place them in a separate plastic bag. Include a shirt, pants, clean underwear and socks.

    • 5

Put each of the three bags into a duffel bag or carry-on suitcase so your child only has to carry one bag. Add any extra items that he might need for his overnight stay to the larger bag. Include a jacket, hat and gloves or a swimsuit and towel, depending on the weather and the host's plans for the day.
